ตะรุเตา เป็นคำที่เพี้ยนมาจากคำว่า ตะโละเตรา ในภาษามลายู แปลว่า มีอ่าวมาก อุทยานแห่งชาติตะรุเตาเป็นจุดรวมของความงามที่ธรรมชาติสร้างสรรค์ ทั้งบนเกาะและในน้ำ มีป่าที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ เป็นที่อยู่อาศัยของสัตว์ป่านานาชาติ ปะการังหลากสีสวยสด จนเป็นที่กล่าวขวัญของนักดำน้ำทั่วโลก ตะรุเตาได้รับการยกย่องจากองค์การ UNESCO ให้เป็นมรดกแห่งอาเซียนและเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติทางทะเลแห่งแรกของประเทศไทย

            The name Tarutao is derived from the Malay word Talohtrao, meaning having many boys. Tarutao National Marine Park is a dream destination for many travelers because of its natural beauty , both island and underwater. The lush forest is home to a variety of wildlife, while the underwater scene boasts colorful coral reefs that attract divers from around the world.

            Tarutao has been credited by the UNESCO to be one of ASEAN Heritage Parks and reserves and since then it became Thailand 's first national marine park.
